The Redwood Coast Kite Festival will be a free public event held along the Humboldt Bay waterfront. In collaborative efforts with Artists and galleries associated with the Ink People, Kites as Art installations are being planned to be displayed during the winter and early spring months. ![]() The Redwood Coast Kite Festival is planned for May 21 and 22, 2022. Workshops are planned for May 7 and 8, 2022. Registrations will be made through an online portal. These will be funded by a combination of ways, some spots will be participant funded while other spots will be “scholarship” or on a sliding scale fee. Workshops will be available for a limited number of participants. Interest in kiting as a sport and art form has continued. Then, in July of 2021 Brookings ended its hosting of the SOKF leaving a hole for Kite Festivals in this area. That free to the public 3 day Kite Festival drew thousands of spectators and reservations at Brookings’ motels, VRBO’s, and B&B’s had to be made a year in advance in some cases. Brookings hosted the Southern Oregon Kite Festival (SOKF) for 25 years through 2018. Then, interest in the kite festival shifted to a stronger base of kiting pilots in Southern Oregon. Unfortunately, he passed away before the second festival in 1993. The first Redwood Coast Kite Festival in Humboldt took place in 1992. Professional kite flyers and kite festival enthusiasts follow this line of festivals up and down the West Coast each year. The nearest northern festival is hosted in Lincoln City, Oregon. The nearest southern festival is hosted in Berkeley, CA. The 2022 Redwood Coast Kite Festival will place Humboldt on the map as an important missing link in the chain of West Coast kite festivals. Kite flying is a healthy outdoor physical activity open to all ages. Everyone enjoys watching various types of kites flying in the sky. ![]() Several days each week, weather providing, various folks who fly kites can be seen bringing joy to community members. Since Spring of 2019, a small and continuously growing group of kiters have been flying on Halverson Park, Waterfront Fields, in Eureka. It encourages creativity in all ages and skill levels. Kiting and kite creation is an art form, filling the skies with color and shapes, and employing skills of science, technology, art, and mathematics. "I want to stay connected to the culture and this is, like, the best event and to stay connected to the roots," he said.Kite Festivals have something for everyone. Yashesh Savani also remembers flying kites as a child in India. And, you know, at the end of the night, everybody just has the dinners and it's a good family day," said Kachhadiya. "It's usually a fight between friends, fight between neighbours. Kids run around and collect the fallen kites. People use small kites attached to cotton string, which is treated with a special mixture often containing eggs and glass.Ĭompetitors try to cut other kites' strings and take them out of the air. Kite fightingįor the Indian festival, kite flying is usually competitive. The festival also has a few special, extra large kites with attachments called pendants that wowed the crowd.īut these kites are what Kachhadiya calls "show kites,'' which can be quite different from the kites flown in India. On Saturday and Sunday, people spread out at Citadel Hill, some to fly their kites and others to take in the show. The festival is usually held in January in India, but to make it work in Halifax, the date was changed to summer. People filled the skies above Citadel Hill with colourful kites Saturday and Sunday. ![]()
